Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy as a cure for premature ejaculation may sound a bit extreme at first. Most men are stopped by two thoughts when it comes to psychotherapy to help them with their premature ejaculation:

  • Thinking psychotherapy is only for nut cases / crazy people/ psychos
  • Deep shame about the problem and an unwillingness to disclose themselves

Those are certainly two very valid arguments. However it is worth also considering the effects untreated premature ejaculation can have:

  • Decreased self confidence
  • Reluctance to start new relationships
  • Uncertainty about current relationship
  • Feeling misunderstood in relationship
  • Ongoing frustration and/or humiliation
  • Frustration on the side of the partner

Why psychotherapy for treating premature ejaculation?

The brief answer to this question is that psychotherapy can help resolve deep psychological issues that might cause the problem. Psychotherapy can also actively involve the partner in the process.

The longer answer is that reasons for premature ejaculation are often not physical but mental.  All the exercises in the world will not help you unless you deal with your underlying believes that sabotage you.

In psychotherapy a trained specialist takes you through this proces.

Psychotherapy - cleaning up the past

Performance anxiety is one example of a cause for premature ejaculation, depression another. In same cases the cause reaches deep in the past.

Some man might have made experiences in his childhood that cause his premature ejaculation now.

An example of such an experience is getting caught while playing with his penis and being scolded for it.

The man might have learnt from this or general masturbation habits in his teens that it is important not to get caught when having sex. He thus tries to makes the act as short as possible unconsciously trying to reduce the risk of getting caught and scolded.

Other men might have learnt that sex is evil, feel guilty about it and thus experience a high amount of psychic pressure which makes them ejaculate prematurely.

Psychotherapy can provide a safe framework in which a couple can seek guided help with the problem. The psychotherapist can help to break through the iron curtain of silence that has developed due to shame, guilt and insecurity on both partners’ sides.

  Psychotherapy explained

What happens in psychotherapy?

Usually the professional first tries to find the cause for the premature ejaculation together with his client. This is done through discussing the issue, and going through some sort of check lists in a conversational tone.

Once the exact cause for the premature ejaculation is pinned down the therapist chooses from his wide arsenal of treatments.

These treatments reach from simple discussion in which limiting believes are questioned and changed up to medication in case of depression.

Behavioral techniques

Some professionals combine their therapeutic approach with behavioral techniques that teach the man specific techniques to control his ejaculation.

One of the exercises could be sharpening the attention on the level of sexual arousal and learning how to cope with upcoming anxiety.

In case the therapy is done together with the partner issues are discussed with them together and behaviors that might contribute to premature ejaculation can be discovered.

In case the therapist is more on the behavioral side specific techniques can be given and directly worked on in form of sexual therapy.

This does obviously not mean that the couple has sex in front of a judging and commenting therapist. Instead he gives them practical exercises to do that are discusses in the next meeting.

Does Psychotherapy Work?

Several studies have been done to prove if psychotherapy is effective in treating premature ejaculation.

Although the number of people that participated in those studies was rather small compared to the number that are required for drug testing the results are still valuable.

Psychotherapy proved to be effective in all studies.

There was however a high number for whom the problem of premature ejaculation returned after the therapy was finished. In some studies up to ¾ of the participants still were at least occasionally fighting with the issue.

A valuable add-on

Interesting was that the success rate was more than 2.5 times higher for people where a combination of psychological work and actual exercises in the context of behavioral therapy was used.

Behavioral therapy thus is one component that should always be added when you are doing a psycho therapy.
